Movie: When the Land becomes a Commodity

Indiginous communities in southern Mexico are heavily threatened by monocropping, the upgrading of infrastructure, tourism and repression. Until today these communities are operating on the grounds of self-organisation, collaboration and subsistence economy. The land that is conceived as „mother earth“ in indiginous cosmovision is increasingly focused on in politics and economy and it is more and more transformed into goods. The film (2013) is not only looking at neo-liberal „development projects“ and resistance of the people affected, it also broaches the issue of the link to urban regions and consumers from the wealthy North thus there is a growing demand for palm oil, biofuels and exotic tourism. Die indigenen Gemeinden Südmexikos sind durch Monokulturen, Infrastrukturausbau, Tourismus und Repression massiv bedroht. Die Gemeinden funktionieren bis heute auf der Basis von Selbstorganisation, Kollektivarbeit und Subsistenzwirtschaft. Das Land, das in der Kosmovision der Indigenen als "Mutter Erde" verstanden wird, gerät immer stärker ins Visier von Politik und Wirtschaft und wird zunehmend in eine Ware konvertiert. Neben den neoliberalen "Entwicklungsprojekten" und dem Widerstand der betroffenen Bevölkerung werden auch die Verbindungen zu urbanen Regionen und uns Konsument_innen im reichen Norden beleuchtet, denn der Hunger nach Palmfett, Biosprit und exotischem Tourismus wächst.
